Minds Matter Over Easy . . .Elizabeth F. Loftus

And thsus, damn, I forgot . . .
Elizabeth F. Loftus: "
Elizabeth F. Loftus
Elizabeth F. Loftus was born in 1944 in Los Angeles. Her mother was a librarian and her father a doctor. Her interests include both mathematics and psychology, which helps to explain her double major at the University of California at Los Angeles. Then she went on to obtain a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University in 1970.
Loftus's early research centered on learning and problem solving with computers. Eventually, she became interested in how human memory functions and coauthored several books on memory. She wanted to become involved in more socially relevant kinds of research and got her chance in 1974 with a grant to study the effects of leading questions on witnesses' memory of traffic accidents.
In her 1979 book, Eyewitness Testimony (which won a 1980 National Media Award, Distinguished Contribution), she described her theory of how perceptions can modify human memory. Leading questions can have a permanent effect on the memory of a witness. This research helped her to become one of the nation's leading legal consultants in the area of eyewitness testimony in trials.
Elizabeth Loftus is professor of psychology at the University of Washington. She has written several books with her husband, Geoffrey Loftus. Her interests continue to focus on understanding how human memory is shaped by perception and experience.

The League of Conservation Voters : LCV Statement on President Bushs Energy Policy Speech

Magic is misdirection and these guys, DeLay et al, are masters.
.
The League of Conservation Voters : LCV Statement on President Bushs Energy Policy Speech: "WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Deb Callahan today released the following statement on President Bushs Energy policy speech:
'Once again, rhetoric replaces leadership on energy issues. For an administration that claims to be wedded to the free market, it has a strange habit of offering huge government subsidies to big energy companies already making billions in profits.
President Bush's proposals today are a rehash of failed initiatives focused on outdated or unproven technology sprinkled with new proposals that continue to embrace consumption over conservation. Why should taxpayers be responsible for siting new oil refineries? For that matter, where do we put the radioactive waste from all these new nuclear plants when we have no place to store the thousands of tons of waste from existing plants?
It is disappointing that the President is still unable to acknowledge that the road to energy independence begins with increasing fuel economy standards for cars and trucks and real leadership on a national energy efficiency program, coupled with federal leadership on the development and use of renewable energy sources. America thirsts for leadership -- not rhetoric.'

TheFirstTime - Amazing first time stories!

All work and no play ...this is a site for tweakers every which way where erotic play does not equal freakiness. I heard that Frist and Bush had an embareassing encounter in a chat room here. Both claimed they where seeking inspirational stories of epiphany, maybe communion, but that sounds, you know, unmanly, because you gotta be manly to take all that dunk'n' and stuff. We know, you know, look it's clear, I don't know what's the problem, see?

The Christian Nazis

This interview with Dr. Steigmann-Gall, when read with Bush's remarks about "Faith" based politics in mind, will corkscrew through any passivity one might have regarding the "fundamentalism" of the GOP leadership. Frist and Bush both exploit a vague christianity which allows mainstream GOPers to rationalize waking up in bed with the hate mongering religious right.
The Christian Nazis: "Hitlers Christianity
The Turning: How did Hitler see Christ?

Steigmann-Gall: Almost all of the Nazis I investigated esteemed Christ, with only one important exception. Now how did they square the circle by esteeming the king of the Jews? By determining that, all along, Jesus had really been an Aryan. It sounds obscene of course, and it is obscene. But people, when they try to understand it, think that this is another idiosyncrasy of Hitler, or his sloppy way of trying to have everything both ways.

Here, too, however, we see that there is a lineage behind the idea that Jesus had in fact been an Aryan. And one of the places that you see this is in 19th century German thought. Two men are most often seen as originating the idea of the Aryan Christ - one is an Englishman, Huston Stewart Chamberlain, famously the son-in-law of Richard Wagner, who lived long enough to see Hitler's rise and who sanctioned Hitler as God-given. And the other was a 19th century Frenchman, Ernest Renan, who came out with a theory that Jesus had not been a Jew at all. Antisemites in the 19th century looked at Jesus and said 'Well, he doesn't care about the law, he doesn't like the Old Testament, he throws the moneychangers and hagglers out of the temple. In John 8:44 he says 'Jews, you are the children of the devil', this kind of thing. And so there was a particular kind of intellect in the 19th century who began this idea of the Aryan Christ. And Hitler and almost all Nazis continue this lineage of thought.

The Turning: I guess the riddle now is if the Nazis were reading the New Testament and finding such racist ideas in it, were they just radically misreading and misinterpreting what an average German might have heard in a church at the time? Or, were they in step with their times? If you had gone "

"Do not despair, you'll soon die from the foul air."Pentagon Acknowledges Four Wargames In Progress on 9/11: "In a Congressional hearing last week, Pentagon Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Richard Myers acknowledged the wargames, but claims the military did not have overall responsibility for responding to the attacks. If this is the case, one might ask what responsibility they did have. Why have these wargames and their impact on the 9/11 response not been discussed in the media and other public forums? Sleepwalking to Disaster in Iran

I wonder if the whole neocon con is based on inducing a pyschedelic state of other reality, wherein, we know that something is happening, but maybe it's better to backoff from that knowledge because it just might be a paranoiac hallucination?
Sleepwalking to Disaster in Iran: "Late last year, in the aftermath of the 2004 Presidential election, I was contacted by someone close to the Bush administration about the situation in Iraq. There was a growing concern inside the Bush administration, this source said, about the direction the occupation was going. The Bush administration was keen on achieving some semblance of stability in Iraq before June 2005, I was told.
When I asked why that date, the source dropped the bombshell: because that was when the Pentagon was told to be prepared to launch a massive aerial attack against Iran, Iraq's neighbour to the east, in order to destroy the Iranian nuclear programme.
Why June 2005?, I asked. 'The Israelis are concerned that if the Iranians get their nuclear enrichment programme up and running, then there will be no way to stop the Iranians from getting a nuclear weapon. June 2005 is seen as the decisive date.'
To be clear, the source did not say that President Bush had approved plans to bomb Iran in June 2005, as has been widely reported. The President had reviewed plans being prepared by the Pentagon to have the military capability in place by June 2005 for such an attack, if the President ordered.
But when Secretary of State Condi Rice told America's European allies in February 2005, in response to press reports about a pending June 2005 American attack against Iran, she said that 'the question [of a military strike] is simply not on the agenda at this point -- we have diplomatic means to do this.' The New York Times > Editorial: Bill Frist's Religious War

The New York Times > Opinion > Editorial: Bill Frist's Religious War: "Right-wing Christian groups and the Republican politicians they bankroll have done much since the last election to impose their particular religious views on all Americans. But nothing comes close to the shameful declaration of religious war by Bill Frist, the Senate majority leader, over the selection of judges for federal courts.
Senator Frist is to appear on a telecast sponsored by the Family Research Council, which styles itself a religious organization but is really just another Washington lobbying concern. The message is that the Democrats who oppose a tiny handful of President Bush's judicial nominations are conducting an assault 'against people of faith.' By that, Senator Frist and his allies do not mean people of all faiths, only those of their faith.
It is one thing when private groups foment this kind of intolerance. It is another thing entirely when it's done by the highest-ranking member of the United States Senate, who swore on the Bible to uphold a Constitution that forbids the imposition of religious views on Americans. Unfortunately, Senator Frist and his allies are willing to break down the rules to push through their agenda - in this case, by creating what the senator knows is a false connection between religion and the debate about judges."

9 Students Write Book on Class and Politics in Britain

9 Students Write Book on Class and Politics in Britain: "Race, class, and gender in the British perspective.
Lawrence '00 and Mello '00 are from Madison, Wisconsin, and Kensington, California, respectively. Their London classmates were Ariel Heitler '00 of New York City, and Ty Moore '01 of Bainbridge, Island, Washington, and now-alumni Lakshmi Ramakrishnan '99, Polly Dondy-Kaplan '99, Mary Jerzak '99, and Alex Levine '99.
Based in central London, the nine discerned and analyzed class relations in their environment through books and newspapers, observations of daily life, and exposure to theater, film, and the media. They also were able to travel to Yorkshire to study first hand the effects of a dramatic class conflict that has devastated entire mining communities. "

washingtonpost.com: And the Verdict on Justice Kennedy Is: Guilty

washingtonpost.com: And the Verdict on Justice Kennedy Is: Guilty

And the Verdict on Justice Kennedy Is: Guilty - WashPost 4-9-05

Edwin Vieira told the gathering that Kennedy should be impeached because his philosophy, evidenced in his opinion striking down an anti-sodomy statute, "upholds Marxist, Leninist, satanic principles drawn from foreign law."

Ominously, Vieira continued by saying his "bottom line" for dealing with the Supreme Court comes from Joseph Stalin. "He had a slogan, and it worked very well for him, whenever he ran into difficulty: 'no man, no problem,' " Vieira said.

The full Stalin quote, for those who don't recognize it, is "Death solves all problems: no man, no problem." Presumably, Vieira had in mind something less extreme than Stalin did and was not actually advocating violence. But then, these are scary times for the judiciary. An anti-judge furor may help confirm President Bush's judicial nominees, but it also has the potential to turn ugly.

A judge in Atlanta and the husband and mother of a judge in Chicago were murdered in recent weeks. After federal courts spurned a request from Congress to revisit the Terri Schiavo case, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) said that "the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior." Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) mused about how a perception that judges are making political decisions could lead people to "engage in violence."

"The people who have been speaking out on this, like Tom DeLay and Senator Cornyn, need to be backed up," Schlafly said to applause yesterday. One worker at the event wore a sticker declaring "Hooray for DeLay."
